The Concord Magazine Turns 10!

The Concord Discussion List Turns 10, Too!

By Debbie Bier, Publisher and Editor of this publication

The Millbrook - click to enlargeIn this oh-so-ephemeral medium of the World Wide Web, the online Concord Magazine celebrates its 10th anniversary online! And we're also celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Concord Discussion List, now 580 members strong. This list has exchanged over 33,500 messages since it's been on YahooGroups (April, 1998).

Pause a moment to let that sink in. Ten years online for each. So many online endeavors don't last 10 months, yet both of these have managed to somehow continue for a decade. What accounts for such amazing longevity in this gone-in-a-second virtual world?

Well, what hasn't kept the ezine and discussion list going? Students, please choose from the below which item(s) are not true.
  1. A town filled with fascinating activities
  2. A beautiful town to discuss and depict
  3. A well-documented history with international interest and impact
  4. Artistic and literary traditions of the highest order
  5. Wonderful contributors
  6. Many amazing, one-of-a-kind residents
  7. A vibrant grassroots democratic tradition almost four centuries old
  8. A plush investor bankrolling the endevor
  9. Four dynamic seasons each year
  10. Sheer doggedness on the part of ezine staff and list moderators
  11. A highly engaged community
  12. Experts of every type (both self-appointed and internationally-recognized)
  13. World-wide interest from citizens, academics and tourists
Answer: H. Actually, we operate on a shoestring... and sometimes it's a bit frayed, but never beholden to anyone but our editoral mission to present Concord through multiple points of view. Just goes to show that the voice of the people is alive and well on the Internet!

Yet, we find that each edition of the Concord Magazine has new readers -- even from Concord. If you are such a reader, we welcome you to this, the start of our next 10 years! Find links to each of our previous editions (all still online) here. Subscribe for free by sending email to concord-magazine-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Reply to their confirmation request and you're set.

Also, not everyone has found the Concord Discussion List, although its messages, we know, are fowarded around Concord avidly. Through this forum we educate, discuss, and thereby change the course of public opinion and events. We discuss everything from the politics of the day to local wildlife, events, places to do business (especially restaurants!), local news, history, and anything of and about Concord. The list archives are open to the public, but only members may post. Anyone from anywhere may join; find list guidelines here. Subscribe by sending email to concord-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Reply to their confirmation request and then you may post.
